Producer

“The producer’s job is to get the artist’s vision onto the recording” – Bill Keis

OK…so what is a producer?

A producer has to have many skills and wear many hats.  Often he/she has to work with the artist or band as a writer, arranger &/or musical director before (and sometimes during) the recording sessions.  He/she should be knowledgeable about recording costs and be able to work within the budget.

An extensive knowledge of musical styles is invaluable as a producer, as well as a knowledge of recording techniques, good people skills and a list of good session players.

Often the producer will play on the recording, too.  Sometimes he/she has to be a referee, sort of a peacemaker!

And today, the producer is sometimes the tracking, mixing & mastering engineer as well.

So where can you find someone with all these skills?
